April 16 - Staples Center, Los Angeles. With everybody thinking they were going to be easily swept by the Lakers the Hornets won game 1 at the Staples Center 109-100.

Kobe Bryant had a good game and scored 34 points shooting 13-for-26 from the field, but the day belonged to New Orleans's All-Star point guard Chris Paul who controlled the pace of his team and completely dominated the fourth quarter doing whatever he wished to score 17 of his 33 points. He also ended with 7 rebounds and 14 assists.

Playing without their scoring leader David West who's out for the season, the Hornets are supposed to lack the size and talent of face the Lakers frontcourt although that was not the case today. While L.A. got 13 points, 9 rebounds and an intimidating figure in Andrew Bynum who was able to play 25 minutes, Pau Gasol, the man who really makes the difference besides Kobe Bryant, had 6 rebounds and 6 assists but couldn't contribute more than 8 points in 2-for-9 shooting. And Odom didn't do much either.

The Lakers started slow in the first quarter but managed to take the lead 17-16 with little more that 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Things didn't go as expected after that, they would never lead again and would only get to tie the score a couple of times. But every time the Lakers got close Chris Paul responded with the right play. The Hornets committed just 3 turnovers that cost them 6 points while L.A. committed 16 that New Orleans transformed in 17 points.

Ron Artest had 11 rebounds and 16 points that included a 43-foot 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer that cut the Hornets lead to 55-47 just seconds after Kobe hit his head with courtside chair. He stayed lying in the floor for some seconds but had no problem to return in the second half.

The Quotes

Phil Jackson (LAL Coach): "Our defense, I thought, was late, I think we were late on everything. They were the aggressors, and they stayed aggressive... I think they respect the Hornets. I just don't think they were keyed in on what they have to do."

Kobe Bryant (Lakers): "."

Pau Gasol (Lakers): "I'm disappointed, yeah. Stunned, surprised. But we were the ones responsible for that to happen, so we have to own up to that and come back to work in the next couple of days and get the series where we want it to be."

Lamar Odom (Lakers): "It's always good for us, when I think about the personality of our team, to be humbled a little bit. Sometimes that's the best thing for us, to be humbled. To lose on our home court in the playoffs, probably against a team that people think we should handle easy, I think it's good for us."

Chris Paul (Hornets): "."

Carl Landry (Hornets): "A lot of people counted us out from the beginning. A lot of people probably still count us out. That's cool. A lot of people might think this game might have been lucky, but we play as a team. We play as a collective unit. We're without David West, but we've still got dudes on this team that can step up."
